Modern India is a great paradox. Blessed with a rapidly growing economy, India has a burgeoning upper and middle class. Yet it still counts more people living in poverty than anywhere in the world. Democracy and meritocracy have fueled India’s evolution into a major economic player, yet its wealth of languages, religions and castes leave scars that haven’t completely healed. The number of schools sending residencies to India has increased dramatically in recent years. Most focus their immersions on the political capital New Delhi in the north -- with an inspirational visit to the Taj Mahal in Agra -- as well as the business capital Mumbai in the west. Schools tend to focus on Bangalore or Hyderabad as a third business destination, but increasingly schools are branching out to include cities like Chennai or Pune in their programs. For weekend or cultural getaways, the Pink City of Jaipur, the beaches of Goa, or the backwaters of Kerala are often considered.
