Many MBA programs believe that the underlying strength of their MBA community depends on how close-knit their students are. They believe in the theory that “students who play together, stay together”. To help foster this sense of community and camaraderie, many schools have implemented a slate of pre-MBA Adventure Trips.

These one-week trips, which typically take place immediately before pre-MBA orientation, pair a small number of ascending second year students with a larger group of incoming students. Total number of participants can range from 10 to 30, though we have found 16 to 18 participants to be the ideal number for most schools.

Adventure itineraries range from relaxing to adventurous to exotic. Some popular destinations include:

  • Costa Rica. Groups frequently visit the Arenal Volcano and Manuel Antonio National Park areas. Activities including ziplining, rafting, hiking, and relaxing in volcanic hot springs.
  • Fiji. Groups typically include a two-day kayaking/hiking excursion to the interior of Fiji’s largest island, followed by several days of chill time at the beach.
  • Egypt. Groups visit Cairo and Luxor to see Egypt’s historical sites including the Pyramids, Sphinx and Valley of Kings and Queens.
  • Argentina.   Groups often pair skiing and hiking in Bariloche with several days in the cosmopolitan capital, Buenos Aires.
Each program is designed to give incoming students an opportunity to visit another part of the world with individuals they will be studying with for the next two years.

At TravelMBA’s largest adventure program, more than 400 students are traveling simultaneously to 27 destinations around the world. In addition to designing, developing, and implementing each program, TravelMBA can also coordinate the registration and trip assignment process.
